Exporting Lossless Slog2 Video

Exporting Lossless Slog2 Video

Recently I decided to try selling my footage via microstock. It was as easy as pie to pass their test and now I need to upload some video clips. I decided to upload each video in two variants: graded version and slog2 ungraded footage.

After I rendered a few clips, I decided to try to color grade a video that I rendered ungraded before. It turned out that artifacts and posterization appeared in the sky.  Understanding that these ungraded videos will stay like this, I decided to delve deeply into this issue and determine an optimal codec and container format for keeping ungraded videos.

So,  this is what I need to get:
1) Optimal size of a video, not exceeding the original file more than 2 times. Meaning it can't be any post-production codec.
2) High quality that doesn't differ much from the raw video file. The raw file has 50 Mb bitrate.
3) Standard container format (mov, mp4, avi). Others are not accepted by popular microstock websites meaning that I won't be able to sell an ungraded video with the same high quality that I get from my Sony a7s camera in slog2.

Several hours of tests later, having made not less than 30 renders with different settings, I found the optimal quality that fits all of my criteria.

Optimal settings for export of video without losing quality
1) Quick time profile
2) Codec h264
3) Quality - 100
4) Render in max Depth
5) Uncheck "Limit data rate to" box
6) Check "Use maximum render Quality" box

Size. I got a converted ungraded video exceeding the original footage by two times with bitrate of 131 instead of 50.

P.S. I'm almost sure that I will find an even better codec soon and I will edit/add informations in this post. Thanks for your attention.

Our equipment

King of low light

Sony a7s & carl zeiss 24-70

Filming at night by candlelight? Easy! Ultra-high sensitivity up to 409600 ISO allows to catch even the weakest light source and get good results! The camera is equipped with Carl Zeiss 24-70 Lens. It gives great sharp image and details without artefacts.
We use S-Log2 gamma curve to record our videos. That and high quality polarizing filters give us great raw footage ready for post-processing.

No more static shots

Edelkrone slider plus

Long time ago video consisted of boring static shots for the most part, but everything changed with creation of camera sliders. Besides creative use of this tool, using sliders in video also allows us to hold the viewer's attention to a shot that would have been static before.

Breathtaking aerial shots

dji phantom 3

Even the most interesting and beautiful video can be better if you add at least a little bit of aerial footage. Using DJI Phantom allows to film perfect establishing shots, show an epic location from the air or show a builiding and its territory from an interesting angle.

More color... even more color!

post production

On Post-production stage we do color grading for the S-Log 2 profile bringing back all the colors, then retouch details, add sounds and effects. Colors of sky and greenery are carefully picked and adjusted for every video. The best way to see the result of post-processing is to watch our demo.
